In their continuing bid to provide access to care for underserved communities, the team at the San Antonio Vascular and Endovascular Clinic (SAVE) announces the groundbreaking of Mission Surgery Center at 601 E. Amber St. this September. The full service Ambulatory Surgery Center is scheduled to open in spring 2021.
The new Mission Surgery Center, founded by Board Certified Vascular Surgeon Dr. Lyssa Ochoa, also founder of the Southside headquartered SAVE Clinic, will be the only Medicare-accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center south of downtown San Antonio.
“Our mission is to reduce the number of diabetic amputations in our community, so the primary goal of this new surgery center is to be a resource for community surgeons to develop an amputation prevention center of excellence for our patients and the communities we serve,” said Dr. Ochoa.
Mission Surgery Center will provide an easily accessible, state-of-the-art facility, the only of its kind to be located on the city’s southside. In addition to amputation-prevention procedures, the surgery center will be equipped to handle a wide variety of procedures including orthopedics, eye surgery, plastic surgery, general surgery, cardiology, and pain management.
As September is also Peripheral Artery Disease Awareness Month, this gives a special meaning to this groundbreaking’s timeliness. According to Dr. Ochoa, diabetic amputations disproportionately affect our urban core and southside communities, and a major reason for this is lack of access to the multi-specialty team-oriented care needed to prevent amputations.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has suppressed the ability of many people to seek their normal medical care, Dr. Ochoa and SAVE have adapted with telemedicine, enhanced sanitization protocols, and proactive outreach to patients to ensure their well-being. Developing Mission Surgery Center is another step in that direction.
“We are determined to expand access to care in a meaningful and effective manner that continues to serve the community and bring awareness about peripheral arterial disease to people before it’s too late,” said Dr. Ochoa.
