The McCreless Branch Library celebrated 60 years of serving residents across Southeast San Antonio and Bexar County with a free community event that brought together families, library leaders, and longtime supporters.
Hosted by the San Antonio Public Library, the anniversary celebration featured a special ceremony recognizing the library’s history and lasting impact on the community. Library Board of Trustees Chair Juspreet Kaur, Library Trustee Josie Martinez, and Library Director Sukrit Goswami reflected on six decades of education, literacy, and community connection.
Following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a variety of free family-friendly activities, including face painting, arts and crafts, Pokémon Go gaming, and photo opportunities with the San Antonio Public Library mascot, Smarty.
The McCreless Branch Library first opened its doors on August 14, 1966, as a resource center serving residents throughout Southeast San Antonio and Bexar County. The land was donated to the City of San Antonio by developers G. Sealie and Sollie E. McCreless, whose family name the branch continues to honor.
Through renovations completed in 1995, 2006, and 2022, the library has grown into a modern 12,000-square-foot facility offering interactive spaces for children, teens, and adults. Today, it continues to provide educational programming, access to technology, workforce development resources, and opportunities for lifelong learning.
The 60th anniversary celebration honored not only the library’s rich history but also its ongoing commitment to serving the community for generations to come.
