The City of San Antonio Transportation Department celebrated the opening of the Camden Street Bike Lanes. The project marks the first Tier 1 project from the city’s Bike Network Plan to be constructed.
The 0.4-mile stretch of protected bike lanes gives cyclists a safer and more comfortable option for reaching the Pearl, Museum Reach, and surrounding businesses.
Creating Safer Transportation Options
The new Camden Street Bike Lanes represent an important step toward creating a safer, more connected transportation network for people of all ages and abilities.
The project also supports the city’s Vision Zero SA initiative by creating dedicated space for bicyclists and improving predictability for everyone traveling through the corridor.
“This project demonstrates our commitment to building a transportation system that is safer and more accessible for everyone,” said Catherine “Cat” Hernandez, director of transportation. “The Camden Street Bike Lanes show how the Bike Network Plan introduces a new type of protection for cyclists.”
Protected bike lanes use physical barriers to separate bicyclists from motor vehicles. According to federal research cited by the city, protected bike lanes can reduce crashes involving motor vehicles and bicycles by 50% while making the route more comfortable for riders of different ages and abilities.
“The Camden Street bike improvements help connect residents and visitors to neighborhoods, businesses, parks, the Pearl, Museum Reach and other destinations while encouraging more transportation choices,” said District 1 Councilmember Dr. Sukh Kaur.
Following a brief news conference, local cyclists participated in the inaugural Tour de Camden, a community bicycle ride celebrating the opening of the protected lanes.
The City of San Antonio’s Bike Network Plan establishes a long-term vision for expanding the city’s bicycle network through projects designed to improve safety and connectivity. The city thanked residents, neighborhood stakeholders and community partners whose input helped shape the plan and the Camden Street project.
