District 5 Councilmember Hosting Food Drive to Support Families Impacted by Government Shutdown

As the federal government shutdown continues, uncertainty grows for San Antonio families struggling to make ends meet. With only partial SNAP benefits expected to be distributed, many residents in District 5 and across the city are facing difficult decisions about how to afford food.

To help bridge the gap, District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo is partnering with Impacto Comunitario to host a community food drive on Saturday, November 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Impacto Comunitario, 211 N. Park Blvd., San Antonio, TX 78204.

More than 130,000 families in Bexar County rely on SNAP benefits for their nutritional needs. Councilmember Castillo remains committed to ensuring that residents have access to essential resources and that no family goes hungry during this difficult time.

“As the public votes whether to allocate hundreds of millions of tax dollars to a basketball arena, hundreds of thousands of people are scrambling to keep their families fed,” said Councilmember Castillo. “This food drive is meant to bring community members together in a spirit of solidarity.”

With election day approaching, the Councilmember encourages residents to consider how public dollars are spent and to prioritize the well-being of working families. The food drive serves as both a call to action and a poignant reminder of the power of community support during times of hardship.
