South San Antonio Latina Leaders Unite to Empower Young Voices

South San Antonio Latina Leaders Empower High School Girls Through Writing, Mentorship, and Leadership

Are you a high school girl in San Antonio seeking a way to express yourself, gain confidence, and connect with strong Latina leaders? Two inspiring women from South San Antonio have joined forces to help young Latinas like you grow through the power of storytelling, cultural pride, and real-life mentorship.

Lisa Coleman, Founder and CEO of Soy Latina, and April Monterrosa, Publisher of Live From the Southside Magazine, have launched a powerful partnership to allow high school juniors and seniors to become published writers and future leaders.

Through this collaboration, students participating in the Soy Latina Young Women’s Leadership Association will be invited to join the Youth Writing Program, where they can share their personal stories, poetry, or cultural reflections. Selected writings will be published on LiveFromTheSouthside.com and in the print and digital editions of Live From the Southside Magazine, giving participants the recognition and confidence that comes with seeing their name in print.

But this opportunity is about more than just writing. The Soy Latina program also connects high school girls with Latina professionals and entrepreneurs who serve as mentors, offering educational, business, and community leadership guidance. It’s a chance to build real-world skills, discover your voice, and make your future today.

Lisa Coleman, a proud South San Antonio native, created Soy Latina to empower young Latinas facing challenges similar to those she once experienced. From growing up in poverty to becoming a teen mom and later surviving the loss of her only son to violence, Lisa turned her pain into purpose. Today, she leads a sisterhood of young womenHermanitas, helping them grow into confident, strong, and proud leaders.

April Monterrosa, also raised in South San Antonio, is the first woman to publish a magazine in her community and the founder of Live From the Southside. She is a nationally recognized entrepreneur, author, and radio personality who has always made it her mission to highlight local voices. Her Youth Writing Program encourages students in grades 3–12 to express themselves creatively while learning storytelling skills and being exposed to educational and entrepreneurial opportunities and resources.

Together, Lisa and April are inviting San Antonio high school girls to be a part of something powerful—an opportunity to rise as leaders, explore creative writing, and build a network of support that will last a lifetime.

So if you’re a high school girl in San Antonio who wants to write, lead, and be heard, this program is for you.
