Local pride and fighting spirit will be on full display at the upcoming San Antonio Summer Showdown, happening Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the Boeing Center at Tech Port. Presented by DMP Boxing, the event highlights some of the top San Antonio boxers—from veterans to undefeated prospects—ready to light up the ring.
Fresh off a string of successful boxing cards, DMP Boxing continues to elevate the city’s growing fight scene. With a loyal local fan base and a deep roster of homegrown talent, San Antonio is solidifying its place as a premier destination for boxing in Texas.
Edward “The Hunter” Ortiz: A Southside Fighter’s Story of Redemption
Edward Jeramie Ortiz, one of San Antonio’s most respected fighters, will again have fans talking as his story of triumph continues to inspire. Born on November 7, 1991, and raised on the West Side, Ortiz attended Southwest High School and overcame significant personal struggles before discovering boxing at Zarzamora Street Gym.
Mentored by the late Tony Ayala Sr., Ortiz earned the nickname “The Hunter” for his sharp, strategic style and rangy 6’2” build. He became a local amateur champion and Olympic trialist before turning pro in 2016.
With a professional record of 14-2-2, including 5 knockouts, Ortiz has claimed both the WBC USA Silver Middleweight Title and the ABF Inter-Continental Middleweight Title. Though he is currently under suspension by the Texas Combative Sports Program until June 2025, Ortiz remains a cornerstone of the San Antonio boxing community.
Isaac Bermea: Unbeaten Super Lightweight on the Rise
Isaac Bermea, a super lightweight prospect, has quickly made a name for himself since moving to San Antonio from Eagle Pass in 2020. Training out of Cardona’s Boxing Gym, Bermea made waves with a silver medal at the 2021 Texas State Golden Gloves, becoming the only San Antonio fighter to reach the finals that year.
Turning pro in December 2023, Bermea has remained undefeated as of May 2025, boasting a record of 5-0-1, including 4 knockouts. His victories include a 52-second TKO in March 2024 and a fourth-round finish at the Lights Out event later that year.
Bermea’s explosive performances, combined with his discipline and hunger, have made him one of the most talked-about young San Antonio boxers today.
Javier “Pitbull” Rodriguez: Veteran Fighter Still Battling Strong
A decade into his professional career, Javier “Pitbull” Rodriguez continues to prove why he’s one of San Antonio’s most durable and exciting fighters. Since debuting in 2011, Rodriguez has earned a record of 17-3-3, fighting in the super lightweight division.
His aggressive, pressure-forward style helped him win the WBA Fedelatin Featherweight Title in 2016 with a knockout victory in San Salvador. In recent bouts, Rodriguez returned to top form with a win over John Herrera in November 2024 and headlined a March 2025 card at the Boeing Center, battling to a hard-fought split draw.
Rodriguez is a staple of the city’s boxing culture and a reminder of the grit that defines San Antonio fighters.
San Antonio’s Boxing Scene Shines at Summer Showdown
The San Antonio Summer Showdown is more than just a boxing event—it’s a celebration of the city’s fighting legacy and community spirit. Local gyms, such as Zarzamora Street Gym and Cardona’s Boxing Gym, continue to produce elite athletes who proudly represent the Alamo City in the ring.
From seasoned contenders like Ortiz and Rodriguez to breakout stars like Bermea, this event underscores why San Antonio boxers are earning attention far beyond Texas.
