District 3 Advocates for Youth through Legacy Leadership Initiative

The District 3 office is excited to kick off the 12th annual cohort of the District 3 Legacy Leadership Initiative (LLI), a transformative 6-month program shaping the future leaders of Southside San Antonio. Over the past decade, LLI has helped nurture the leadership potential of young people from our community.

The 2025 cohort began with incredible energy this spring, as students have already begun making a real difference in their neighborhood through hands-on service projects. A highlight is their annual involvement in Basura Bash, where they will team up with the San Antonio River Authority from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 8, to clean up 6 Mile Creek in District 3. This event allows students to demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship and civic responsibility while instilling pride in giving back to their community and helping make Southside San Antonio a better place for everyone.

LLI is a testament to the District 3 office’s dedication to uplifting and empowering youth voices,  underscoring the importance of leadership in creating stronger, more connected communities. With various monthly activities — from business and city government exploration to trades and education — the program offers students a well-rounded understanding of different sectors and opportunities for the future. Each activity is designed to help unlock their full potential while building lasting relationships with peers and mentors.

“We are incredibly proud of all the young people who have participated in the District 3 Legacy Leadership Initiative over the past 12 years,” said District 3 Councilmember Phyllis Viagran. “The success of this program reflects the dedication and passion these students bring to the table. I look forward to seeing the continued impact our alumni will have as they go on to do amazing things in our community and beyond.”

Many LLI alumni have gone on to incredible achievements, such as gaining acceptance to Ivy League universities, receiving full-ride scholarships to top universities like UTSA, working on cutting-edge research with the Department of Defense, and devoting themselves to public service by working with City Council, all while still in high school.

“We are beyond proud of the ongoing success of the Legacy Leadership Initiative, and we can’t wait to see the incredible things this year’s cohort will achieve,” added Councilwoman Viagran.

Applications for the 2026 cohort will open in the fall of 2025. To learn more, visit the LLI webpage.
