Southwest ISD Celebrates Inaugural Flight of Student-Built Plane, Dragon 1

Southwest Independent School District (SWISD) proudly announced the imminent maiden flight of Dragon 1, the inaugural student-built aircraft in South Texas. The Southwest High School Dragon 1 Inaugural Flight Ceremony occurred on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, at 11:30 am at the Stinson-Mission Municipal Airport.

Dragon 1, the culmination of a four-year journey, symbolizes the dedication and collaborative efforts of Southwest High School students, faculty, and esteemed partners, including Union Pacific, American Airlines, the Southwest Education Foundation, the Dee Howard Foundation, and the EAA Chapter 35.

The dedication ceremony united former and current students and special guests to commemorate this extraordinary accomplishment. Dragon 1 marks the successful conclusion of a sophisticated engineering endeavor and underscores the transformative influence of hands-on learning experiences on students’ lives.

“The inaugural flight of Dragon 1 epitomizes the hard work, perseverance, and collaboration of our students and partners,” stated Dr. Jeanette Ball, Superintendent of Southwest ISD. “This project has equipped our students with invaluable skills and experiences that will serve them well beyond graduation.”

Numerous students engaged in the Dragon 1 project have attained certifications, licenses, and practical skills that will lay the foundation for prosperous careers in aviation and beyond.
