Beyond the Percentages: Rewriting the Latina Legacy

By Victoria C. Shipley, MSODL

Let’s be honest: legacy isn’t something you stumble into. It is engineered through strategy, execution, and raw determination. As a 47-year-old single mother, higher education executive, and strategic consultant, my life is built on high-stakes execution and serious time-blocking skills.

That is why I am proud to partner with Live From The Southside Magazine for their Latina Legacy highlight. Through this collaboration, I am shining a direct spotlight on the Latinas driving our economic infrastructure; women who aren’t just sitting at the table but who have clear opinions and the audacity to voice them.

My take? The data on Latina representation in rooms where decisions are made is a systemic failure. Nationally, we comprise less than 2% of the federal judiciary, only 1% of CEOs, and under 3% of state legislators. We are locked out of the seats that dictate policy and funding. Our voices are absent where it matters most.

Changing a family legacy requires rewriting the script entirely. I didn’t obtain my higher education until my 30s. After being a stay-at-home mother for nearly twenty years, I worked two jobs as a single parent to support my daughters. I took my natural gifts of organization, invested heavily in them, and built Transforming Legacies Consulting.

Now, I teach women how to achieve goals and activate their purpose to scale their lives and enterprises. To break these systemic metrics, we need radical intentionality and community. Latinas must unapologetically support Latinas. Buy from a Latina small business. Read literature written by Latina authors. Follow and amplify Latina leaders on social media.

Expect zero filters. Expect brutal honesty. Let’s stop talking about potential and start building legacies. ¡Vámonos!
