A transformative chapter in local health care officially began with the grand opening of University Health Vida, a new multispecialty health center serving the South Side, providing accessible, comprehensive, and compassionate care. Leaders from University Health and the City of San Antonio gathered to celebrate a facility that represents both improved health access and long-term community investment. As a result, it truly marks a major step forward for local residents seeking quality services from University Health Vida San Antonio South Side.
“Vida is a game changer for the South Side, just like Texas A&M–San Antonio, Toyota, and Palo Alto College before us,” said Ed Banos, President and CEO of University Health. “We are changing the narrative on the South Side, and this is only the beginning of our plans to bring health care and economic opportunity to thousands of residents.”
Comprehensive Health and Wellness Services
University Health Vida is a one-stop destination for care, addressing a critical access gap by offering urgent care seven days a week. In addition, additional services are available under one roof. This new approach ensures University Health Vida provides residents of the South Side and greater San Antonio with comprehensive care. Notably, it is all in one place.

Addressing Nonmedical Drivers of Health
The University Health Institute for Public Health is based at Vida and will include a collaborative space called Community Commons. This initiative brings together nonprofit partners to address nonmedical drivers of health, including food insecurity, financial literacy, and access to mental health resources. As a result, it’s exciting to see University Health Vida San Antonio South Side serve the region by addressing broader social needs that affect health.
“The Institute for Public Health is a crucial access point to services that go beyond clinical care,” said Carol Huber, DrPH, Vice President of the University Health Institute for Public Health. “By facilitating collaboration among organizations, we are creating sustainable solutions that improve overall community well-being.”
A Beautiful Space for Healing
University Health Vida was intentionally designed to promote healing and wellness. From its modern technology to its thoughtful decor, every detail reflects research showing that art and environment can positively impact recovery. Notably, University Health Vida San Antonio South Side has set a new standard for healing environments in the area.
Through University Health’s award-winning SaludArte: Art of Healing program, artwork throughout the facility incorporates the natural landscapes and colors of South Texas. A striking focal point is the three-story exterior mosaic mural created by South Side native artist Louis Vega Treviño. The mural’s vibrant colors and geometric patterns celebrate the region’s culture, history, and sense of place. Importantly, the integration of community and creativity truly defines University Health Vida San Antonio South Side’s mission to serve the local population.
