Texas A&M University San Antonio Honored with Gold Award for Championing Veteran Education

Texas A&M University San Antonio has once again been recognized for its commitment to serving those who have served our nation. The University has been named a Gold Recipient of the 2025 Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Award (VEERA) by the Texas Veterans Commission, celebrating its continued dedication to military-connected students and their academic success.

This marks the fifth VEERA the University has received—four of which have been Gold, the highest level of distinction. Gold status is reserved for colleges and universities that offer the most comprehensive and far-reaching support services for veterans and their families.

“We’re very proud to be recognized as a Gold Award winner by the Texas Veterans Commission,” said Leah Musquiz, interim director of the University’s Office of Military Affairs. “It celebrates our commitment to our military-connected Jaguars and the strengths they bring to our campus community. This award reinforces that we’re doing the right thing and headed in the right direction.”

Musquiz and several members of the Military Affairs team accepted the award in Fort Worth earlier this month during the 17th annual Texas A&M University System Military-Affiliated Symposium. Established in 2011, the System Office of Veteran & Military Services promotes the success of veterans and military-affiliated students across A&M campuses through collaboration and shared resources.

At A&M San Antonio, military-connected students make up 16 percent of the student body, including approximately 500 student veterans. The University has a longstanding reputation for supporting service members and their families. In 2014, it opened Patriots’ Casa, a $12 million facility that serves as a central hub for military-affiliated services. The space features a private counseling suite with licensed professionals who offer low- or no-cost mental health support, as well as a ceremony room, lounge, children’s therapy area, and outdoor garden.

The Texas Veterans Commission, established in 1927, serves as the state’s advocate for veterans, ensuring they receive the support and resources they deserve. Through the VEERA program, the commission evaluates higher education institutions annually based on academic support, campus engagement, and community outreach, awarding Gold, Silver, and Bronze distinctions.

Texas A&M University San Antonio’s continued recognition as a Gold Award recipient underscores its unwavering commitment to excellence in veteran education and support. The University remains dedicated to empowering military-connected Jaguars as they pursue academic achievement and personal growth.
