Texas A&M-San Antonio Powers Nearly $300 Million in Economic Impact Across Bexar County

Texas A&M University-San Antonio is making a major impact on the region’s economy. A new study by Lightcast reveals the University contributed $292.6 million to the Bexar County economy in fiscal year 2022–23, nearly double its $166.3 million impact just five years ago. The growth supports 3,242 local jobs, making the South Side institution a key driver of economic development.

Building Jobs, Wealth, and Workforce

  • $98 million in operations spending supported 1,036 jobs.

  • Student spending generated $12.9 million in local income.

  • Alumni earnings added $181.8 million to the economy.

“Our presence strengthens the South Side and beyond,” said President Dr. Salvador Hector Ochoa. “We are an economic powerhouse for our region.”

High Returns for Students and Taxpayers

  • Students can expect $427 million in lifetime earnings increases.

  • Average graduate earns $28,500 more annually than a high school graduate.

  • For every $1 in state funding, taxpayers see $2 in return, plus $37.2 million in savings through reduced public service use.

Statewide Benefits

The University’s total social and economic impact across Texas has grown to $2.6 billion, up $500 million from 2018–19. This includes added income, increased productivity, and long-term community benefits.
