Taking Center Stage: Clarissa Ramos

Last December, Clarissa Ramos received a Broadway World Newcomer Award nomination for her role as Miss Reed in Magik Theatre’s Lyric and the Keys. This was followed by appearances in readings of The Shape of Things and La Ruta. She also directed Dora’s Westside Adventure for Festival Audaz.

While Ramos enjoys the challenge of each role, her most recent was the most challenging. In September, Ramos starred as Ana in San Pedro Playhouse’s production of Real Women Have Curves by Josefina Lopez. This play earned high praise from Broadway World. The play is a coming-of-age story set in Los Angeles. It touches on themes such as body image and immigration, which Ramos found deeply resonant. Reflecting on the themes, Ramos emphasized the resilience and value of immigrants. She added that the groundbreaking play continues to inspire audiences today.

“What resonated with me most was how hardworking and valuable immigrants are to this country,’ said Ramos. “They deserve to feel safe and celebrated. On stage, you could see how all the women fill their world with love, laughter, and hope for their future.”

Ramos notes that portraying Ana challenged her to embrace self-confidence and reject societal standards of beauty, encouraging others to confront biases in casting and persist in their ambitions.

“I am valid to feel beautiful in my body even if it doesn’t fit society’s standards of thinness,“ said Ramos. “We should challenge society and casting directors for any biases that they have and keep showing up to every audition.”

Ramos describes working with the cast and crew as a privilege. She highlights their professionalism and camaraderie.

“There were times that I had to focus so hard on not breaking character because they are masters with comedy and kept me on my toes! The cast is so professional and in sync with each other.”
