A Story of Love, Loss, and Healing
San Antonio native Monica E. Martinez recently celebrated the release of her debut children’s book, Painted Memories, a heartfelt
story born from her own journey through grief and resilience. The launch took place at Tandem San Antonio on Sunday, August 24, 2025, where community members gathered to honor her work and the legacy behind it.
The event included a moderated conversation with Dr. Lorena “Lorraine” Pulido, Ph.D., Trustee with the Alamo Colleges District. Dr. Pulido guided an intimate discussion on how loss can be transformed into legacy, creating a meaningful space for reflection and healing.
Painted Memories was inspired by Monica’s personal experience after the loss of her husband, Anthony, in 2022.
The story, brought to life with beautiful illustrations, helps children explore themes of love, grief, and healing through the lens of creativity and hope.
Its release was especially significant, honoring Anthony’s angelversary on August 1 and what would have been his birthday on August 25.
Monica, a graduate of Burbank High School (Class of 1995) and St. Mary’s University with a degree in Political Science, became a widow at the age of 45. That life-changing experience deeply shaped her path as a writer and storyteller. Through her book, she shares her family’s story while offering comfort to other families navigating the pain of loss.
She reminds readers that love does not end when someone passes—it transforms into the cherished memories carried forward.
A proud San Antonian, Monica has long valued community, storytelling, and the mentors who encouraged her voice along the way. Beyond writing, she continues to support local causes, spend time with loved ones, and find peace in moments of reflection and joy.
