Spring is in full swing at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, and we have an exciting lineup of events to celebrate nature, conservation, and community science! Whether you’re a seasoned birder, a nature-loving family, or someone looking for a unique adventure, there’s something for everyone this April.

Homeschool Adventures: Awesome Insect Art

This month’s homeschool adventure invites children ages 6-12 to explore the incredible world of insects. Learn about the beautiful and diverse insects of Mitchell Lake, then create your insect-inspired artwork!

Guided Bird Tours

📅 Every Sunday (April 6, 13, 20, 27) | ⏰ 8:00 AM
FREE for Members | $10 General | Registration Required

Join our expert birding guide to tour Mitchell Lake’s diverse habitats. Expect to see 30-50 bird species as you explore by foot and car. This experience is best suited for ages 15+, but all bird lovers are welcome.

DND 5e Adventure: The Battle for Mitchell Lake

Calling all adventurers! Invasive species are attacking, and only YOU can help save Mitchell Lake. Join us for a unique Dungeons & Dragons 5e adventure, learn about ecosystems, and enjoy a fun-filled evening with pizza, dice rolling, and nature-based storytelling.

2nd Saturday Habitat Clean-Up

Make a difference in your community by helping to maintain and restore Mitchell Lake’s habitat. Tasks vary by the season but may include trail maintenance, removing invasive species, or planting native plants. Great for groups and families!

Pollinator Picnic

Celebrate the vital role of pollinators while enjoying a delicious meal made possible by these hard-working insects! We provide the food, and you bring a lawn chair or blanket for a picnic among the wildflowers.

Are you new to birdwatching? This family-friendly tour is designed to introduce beginners to birding basics, including identification techniques and how to use binoculars. Ages 5+ are welcome!

City Nature Challenge: Observations Contest

Take part in the global City Nature Challenge by documenting as many species as possible at Mitchell Lake! For every 25 observations logged in iNaturalist, you’ll earn a raffle entry for a prize package featuring a Fiesta medal, t-shirt, stickers, and more.

City Nature Challenge Events Day

A full day of hands-on science and nature exploration!

  • Guided Bird Tour (8:00 AM) – Join our expert guide to identify and document birds for the City Nature Challenge.

  • Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Bioblitz (4:00 – 6:00 PM) – Help us identify tiny aquatic creatures in our wetlands.

  • After Hours Sunset Exploration (4:00 – 7:30 PM) – Discover nocturnal species as the sun sets.

  • UV Light Nocturnal Insect Survey (8:00 – 9:30 PM) – Observe moths and other night-loving insects using UV lights.
