The May 7 event will also include the announcement and screening of the 2022 #FilmSA film contest winning selections. The contest is managed by City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture’s Film Commission in partnership with the World Heritage Office.
Some of the movies scheduled for this season are “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” on Thursday, May 19; “Men in Black” on Thursday, June 16; a 35th anniversary celebration of “La Bamba” on Thursday, September 15; “The Batman” on Saturday, November 5; and others. The 2022 Outdoor Family Film Series selections include recommendations by the community collected through an open call via social media at the beginning of the year. “Although Mission Marquee Plaza is in the heart of District 3, this community facility is for all San Antonio residents and visitors,” said District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran. “Community feedback and engagement is crucial to the success of each programming season, and this year’s schedule reflects that. I invite all of San Antonio to join us at Mission Marquee Plaza.”
This year’s programming season at Mission Marquee Plaza began in March and will include nearly 80 events through November. In addition to the outdoor movies, Mission Marquee Plaza also hosts two farmers & artisans markets each month with a free community wellness/fitness event before each market. The facility will also feature free cultural events that showcase San Antonio’s diverse and rich heritage. Scheduled special events and programming include a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in September, Dia de los Muertos on October 29, special outdoor exhibits, and others.
“We have received an overwhelming response this year to our programming schedule at Mission Marquee Plaza,” said Colleen Swain, Director of the World Heritage Office. “We have been delighted at the amount of interest by local vendors wanting to participate in our markets and movies, the great attendance at our Viva Poesia event in March, and, of course, our upcoming outdoor movie series. We’re honored that Mission Marquee Plaza continues to be a gathering place for the entire San Antonio community.”
Nestled near the historic San Antonio Missions, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mission Marquee Plaza continues the site’s long tradition as a community gathering space by hosting seasonal events including free movie screenings, farmers markets, cultural events, music and literary festivals, and more. In 2007, the City of San Antonio acquired the former Mission Drive-In property. In June 2014, Mission Marquee Plaza officially opened its doors for the next generation of nearby Southside families and all of San Antonio residents and visitors to enjoy.
