KSAT12’s Steve Spriester Highlights South San Neighborhood on “Know Your Neighborhood”

In an episode of KSAT12’s “Know Your Neighborhood,” Steve Spriester visited the South San community to spotlight the area. Known for its strong local pride, the South San neighborhood has long been a cornerstone of San Antonio’s southwest side.

During his visit, Spriester spoke with residents and local business owners who still live and thrive there. These community members reflected on the neighborhood’s deep history, the bonds that keep them connected, and some unique challenges they face as the area continues to evolve.

One of the highlights of the segment was a feature on the neighborhood’s treasured businesses, each of which holds a special place in the hearts of locals:

  • Cuba 1918: A family-owned gem serving authentic Cuban cuisine, preserving the cultural flavors that define the community.
  • Mendez Cafe: A beloved local spot known for its welcoming atmosphere and traditional Tex-Mex dishes, where families have gathered for years.
  • San Antonio Shoemakers (SAS): A renowned local manufacturer, SAS is a major employer and a symbol of the neighborhood’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to quality craftsmanship.
  • Casa Salud: A family medicine clinic that provides essential services to the community, ensuring residents have access to care close to home.

Spriester also stopped at South San High School, where he engaged with other key neighborhood leaders. These conversations highlighted the immense pride in local education and the efforts to support youth and foster a strong future for the community.

The visit included interviews with the founders of the Quintana Neighborhood Association and the South San Proud Neighborhood Association, who shared their insights on working to preserve the area’s character while addressing challenges like economic development and infrastructure.

While the South San ISD neighborhood is steeped in history and pride, residents also discussed some hurdles they face. The community members highlighted the ongoing need for economic support, better public services, and improvements in local infrastructure. Despite these challenges, the overwhelming message was one of unity and resilience—a commitment to ensuring that the neighborhood continues flourishing for future generations.

KSAT12 broadcasted the show live at South San’s local restaurants, Taqueria Mexico and Cuba 1918. Watch the video below for more details and the full interviews!
