On October 31, 2024, City Council A Session, a significant step forward was made for pedestrian safety in District 3. The design and construction of a new mid-block crosswalk on WW White Road near Boxwood Road received official approval, marking an important milestone in Councilmember Phyllis Viagran’s ongoing efforts to enhance mobility and safety in the area.
As pedestrian activity increases along this corridor, the crosswalk project will bring vital safety features to WW White Road, including state-of-the-art warning beacons, ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, and clear roadway striping. These improvements, designed to boost visibility and accessibility, are set to make crossing WW White Rd. It is safer and more convenient, especially for those accessing local businesses and community resources nearby.
Councilmember Viagran expressed her gratitude for the decision, noting its positive impact on the district. “I am pleased that the City Council voted to approve this much-needed pedestrian mobility safety crossing today on the Southeast side of District 3,” said Councilmember Viagran. “This new mid-block crossing will enhance pedestrian safety on the S WW White corridor, which is still a TxDOT-maintained highway. Thank you to the Jupe Manor Neighborhood Association residents and their President, Joy McGhee, for bringing this issue and location to our office’s attention. This new project will bring us closer as a city to reaching our Vision Zero goals.”
Cat Hernandez, Director of Transportation, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the broader impact the crosswalk will have on the community. “We are encouraged by the work to create a safer, more comfortable street environment where everyone, including our most vulnerable road users, can navigate WW White Rd. Pedestrians need to know we care about their safety,” said Hernandez.
The Vision Zero goal, aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries, gains momentum with every improvement like this. As District 3 continues to address safety and accessibility, projects such as the WW White mid-block crosswalk play a crucial role in creating a more connected and secure San Antonio for all its residents.
