The Alamo Colleges District and Schreiner University have announced a new Promise-to-Promise partnership that expands access to higher education for students across South Central Texas.
The expanded transfer agreement allows eligible students to begin their academic journey at any of the five Alamo Colleges and seamlessly transfer to Schreiner University to complete a four-year degree, with tuition covered at both institutions. Through this agreement, Schreiner University becomes the first private institution within the South Central Texas Transfer Compact to participate in a Promise-to-Promise pathway with the Alamo Colleges.
What Is the Promise-to-Promise Program?
AlamoPROMISE is a last-dollar scholarship that allows eligible graduating high school seniors in Bexar County to attend an Alamo College tuition-free. Through the new agreement, students who complete their associate degree and meet eligibility requirements can continue their education at Schreiner University through the Schreiner University Promise Program, which covers tuition for up to four consecutive fall and spring semesters.
This pathway removes financial barriers and provides students with a clear, supported route from community college to a bachelor’s degree.
Leaders Emphasize Access, Affordability, and Opportunity
“This is a powerful step forward,” said Dr. Mike Flores, Chancellor of the Alamo Colleges District. Schreiner University’s joining of our Promise-to-Promise pathways is significant, as it is the first private institution in the South Central Texas Transfer Compact to make this commitment. With Schreiner University now alongside UT San Antonio and Texas A&M–San Antonio, we are expanding regional momentum around our moonshot. These partnerships make earning a degree more attainable and achievable for our students.”
Student Impact: A Pathway to a Nursing Career
Alamo Colleges transfer student Danielle Chavarria will be among the first students admitted to Schreiner University under the new Promise-to-Promise partnership. Chavarria recently graduated from St. Philip’s College with an Associate of Science and plans to pursue a career as a registered nurse.
“When I found out I would be able to attend Schreiner tuition-free, especially at a private university, without the burden of debt, I was in shock,” Chavarria said. “It felt like such a relief. Such a blessing. Truly, it felt like my prayers were being answered.”
Strengthening Regional Transfer Success
Approximately 75% of Alamo Colleges students transfer to four-year universities to complete their degrees. This new Promise-to-Promise partnership strengthens the student support system across participating institutions and builds on previous agreements.
The Alamo Colleges launched their first Promise-to-Promise partnership in 2022 with UT San Antonio’s Bold Promise Program, followed by a 2024 partnership with Texas A&M–San Antonio. The addition of Schreiner University marks a major milestone by expanding the program to include private higher education.
“By partnering with Alamo Colleges, we are opening new doors for students across South Central Texas and the Hill Country,” said Charlie McCormick, President of Schreiner University. “This partnership honors our shared commitment to access, affordability, and opportunity.”
A Model for Student-Centered Higher Education
The Promise-to-Promise partnership between Alamo Colleges and Schreiner University represents a growing commitment to collaborative, student-centered education—ensuring that cost is not a barrier to earning a degree and that students are supported every step of the way.
