For Southside families weighing the cost of college and what a degree could lead to, two announcements from Texas A&M University-San Antonio offer a useful place to start. The university is expanding access through Jaguar Promise while preparing to introduce a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences in fall 2027.
One addresses affordability. The other adds a pathway for students interested in medicine, biomedical research and related health professions. Together, they reflect the university’s efforts to connect higher education with opportunities in the community it serves.

Jaguar Promise helps eligible students cover college costs
Jaguar Promise is a last-dollar scholarship program. It helps eligible undergraduate students cover remaining tuition and mandatory fees after other applicable grants and scholarships are applied, with a book allowance of up to $300 per semester.
Eligibility depends on factors including Texas residency, graduation from a Texas high school, academic standing and, for certain groups, family income. The program includes qualifying first-year and transfer students. Full-time enrollment and continued academic progress are required, and funding availability can change.
For families planning for fall 2027, the university currently lists these priority dates for admission, transcripts and FAFSA or TASFA submission:
- First-year students: January 15, 2027.
- Transfer students: March 15, 2027.
Students should review the university’s full criteria rather than assume they qualify. The Enrollment Services Center can help at 210-784-1300 or BeAJaguar@tamusa.edu.
A new biomedical sciences pathway on the Southside
In its October 26 announcement, A&M–San Antonio said the biomedical sciences degree will launch in fall 2027 within the Department of Natural Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Students will study the science of human health and disease, building on the university’s biology programs. Courses and training will be based in the Science and Technology Building, with opportunities for undergraduate research and internships described in the announcement.
The degree also fits into a broader affiliation involving A&M–San Antonio, the Texas A&M Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine and University Health. That collaboration is intended to expand health sciences education and clinical training opportunities in the region.
For prospective students, the next step is to discuss program plans with university admissions staff and review financial-aid eligibility separately. The degree announcement does not automatically establish eligibility for Jaguar Promise.
