We love when we’re invited to explore other parts of Texas! And, what better way to spend a weekend than on the Texas Wine Trail! If you have read the current issue of Texas Highways Magazine, you probably noticed that the Stonewall Motor Lodge was featured in “13 Trips to Take in Texas in 2020.”
Located in the heart of the Highway 290 Wine Trail, Stonewall Motor Lodge is close to 50+ attractions, breweries, distilleries, wineries and restaurants, all within about a 30 minute drive from the Lodge. The Lodge, situated on 3 acres of tree-filled land, is located at 14818 US-290 East in Stonewall, Texas, which is approximately 80 miles north of San Antonio.
The Stonewall Motor Lodge first hosted the Secret Service and the Press Corps during Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency. LBJ was the 36th President of the United States, following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (on November 22, 1963), from 1963 to 1969.
The Lodge was purchased by 5 Texas couples, headed by Lance and Anita Lubke. Originally built in the 1960s, the newly renovated, rebranded facilities now include 12 rooms, 4 cabins and 4 RV sites. Also added were several public and social areas including an indoor lounge and coffee bar, an outdoor seating area under the trees, an upstairs deck and a barn towards the rear of the property.
One of the favorite rooms at the Stonewall Motor Lodge is The Press Room, which features a photo wall displaying those who covered President Johnson.
The nearby attractions include The Elephant Preserve, Enchanted Rock and Wildseed Farms, along with the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site. Dining options include the Cabernet Grill, Farm Haus Bistro, Hill Top Café and Otto’s German Bistro.
Along the wine trail, you’ll discover hidden treasures such as 4.0 Cellars, Becker Vineyards, Grape Creek Vineyards, Hilmy Cellars, Pedernales Cellars and Woodrose Winery.
