Priscilla Aguilar – Empowering Through Education on the South Side
Born and raised on the culturally rich and resilient South Side of San Antonio, Priscilla Aguilar has stayed true to her roots—both in residence and purpose. Her life’s work revolves around uplifting her community through education, leadership, and advocacy, all while balancing the beautiful chaos of motherhood and pursuing her doctoral degree.
A Life Dedicated to Higher Education
With over 12 years of experience in higher education, Priscilla currently serves as the Director of Administrative Operations for the Office of the President at Palo Alto College. Her work is layered and impactful: managing the President’s Office, nurturing community partnerships, and leading efforts in sponsorship and fundraising. Beyond her campus walls, she also lends her expertise as a member of the City of San Antonio’s Ready to Work Advisory Board, helping to shape workforce development initiatives for the city she calls home.
From Student to Leader
Priscilla’s story is rooted in her humble beginnings at South San High School, followed by her first steps into higher education at Palo Alto College. As a work-study student and Student Government President, her leadership journey began to take form. These early experiences solidified her path in higher education, propelling her from academic advising to upper administration while pursuing her own academic goals.
Armed with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s in Higher Education Leadership, Priscilla is now deep into her doctoral studies, proving that with perseverance, there’s no ceiling to what you can achieve.
Challenges and Triumphs
Her journey, however, wasn’t without struggle. Juggling full-time work while pursuing her degrees demanded resilience. “I didn’t always feel as prepared as others from different demographics,” she shares candidly. “But my determination to succeed helped me push through.” That grit has led her to moments of triumph—chief among them, her advocacy for educational equity and her work with educators and policymakers to bring about systemic change.
Rooted in Community, Inspired by Family
Priscilla’s commitment is deeply personal. As a mother to a 4-year-old and an 8-month-old and a stepmother to a 23-year-old, her drive is fueled by love and legacy. With immigrant grandparents on both sides of her family, she understands the weight and worth of opportunity. “I never thought college was for me,” she admits, “but my mother’s journey inspired me. I never imagined I’d be so close to a doctorate.”
That perspective sets her apart—she isn’t just a professional in higher education; she’s a product of the community she now works to uplift.
Passion, Music, and Purpose
When she’s not advocating for students or strategizing with city leaders, you might catch Priscilla showcasing another side of herself: a music enthusiast who can name songs and artists across genres on command. This quirky skill speaks to her vibrant personality and love for culture.
Words of Wisdom and a Call to Collaborate
To those navigating their journeys, Priscilla offers this advice:
“Self-promotion is crucial; no one will tell your story like you do. Highlight your achievements and share your journey!”
As for what’s next, Priscilla remains open to collaboration with organizations that share her mission to expand educational access for underserved communities. She welcomes partnerships that amplify impact and extend opportunities to those most in need.
