Southside Spotlight: Louis Lopez of YMCA of Greater San Antonio

This month, we proudly spotlight Louis Lopez, President and CEO of YMCA of Greater San Antonio. With over 25 years of YMCA experience, Louis is a visionary leader and dedicated community advocate, bringing positive change and expanded services to San Antonio. Known for his servant’s heart and unwavering commitment, Louis is now leading the charge in a monumental journey— YMCA of Greater San Antonio’s 150th Anniversary Celebration

Founded in 1844, the YMCA began as a haven for young men in London during the Industrial Revolution, rapidly expanding across the globe as a symbol of community, education, and physical well-being. The Y’s mission to foster a healthy spirit, mind, and body resonated deeply. In 1876, this spirit reached San Antonio, marking the beginning of the YMCA of Greater San Antonio as the city’s first non-profit organization. Since then, the Y has been a constant pillar of strength in the community, from pioneering swim lessons in 1912 to introducing the Youth Basketball Association and building the Davis-Scott Family YMCA in 1944, bringing essential programs and support to every generation.

As they approach this historic milestone, Louis is championing the 150th Anniversary Celebration, which will continue through 2026, aptly themed “Uniting Generations.” His leadership is dedicated to honoring the Y’s legacy while pushing forward to ensure it remains a place for all. This celebration will highlight cherished memories, extraordinary milestones, and over 3.3 million lives touched by the Y since it first took root in San Antonio.

Throughout his career, Louis has been a trailblazer in fostering diversity and inclusion within the Y by creating growth opportunities for leaders of color. As COO of the Austin YMCA, he collaborated with Austin Public Health on a comprehensive COVID-19 reopening plan, keeping member safety at the forefront. In San Antonio, Louis spearheaded the Y Living Program and partnered with local health organizations to bring programs like Síclovía to life, further advancing the Y’s mission of healthy living.

Southside native and first-generation college graduate Louis holds a degree in Business Administration from Wayland Baptist University. Outside of his role, Louis cherishes time with his wife Sandra, their three children, and three grandchildren and enjoys staying active, playing basketball, and being near the water.

Thank you, Louis, for leading the YMCA of Greater San Antonio into its next chapter and building a stronger, more connected future for everyone in our community!
