July 5, 2025, marks the 10th anniversary of the San Antonio Missions’ designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a historic moment for Texas and the United States. This prestigious honor, awarded in 2015, elevated Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) and the four missions of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park to a globally recognized cultural landmark.
Together, these five missions make up the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas and one of only 26 cultural heritage sites in the United States. This designation highlights the historical, architectural, and cultural importance of the Spanish colonial missions and the Indigenous communities who shaped them.
Why the San Antonio Missions Matter
The San Antonio Missions are more than tourist attractions—they represent a story of faith, resilience, and cultural fusion. These historic sites preserve the legacies of Spanish colonists, Native American tribes, and generations of Texans.
“The Outstanding Universal Value of the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site is reflected in the resources we protect,” said Christine Jacobs, superintendent of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. “This site includes the highest concentration of original Spanish colonial architecture and landscape features in the country.”
From Mission Concepción to Mission Espada, each location offers unique insight into the history of colonization, faith, agriculture, and community in 18th-century Texas.

The Alamo’s Role in World Heritage
As part of this internationally recognized group, The Alamo—also known as Mission San Antonio de Valero—continues to be a powerful symbol of Texas identity and independence.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we remain dedicated to protecting the Alamo and enhancing the visitor experience through our ongoing $550 million Alamo Plan,” said Dr. Kate Rogers, executive director of Alamo Trust Inc. “This ensures the full 300-year story of the site is preserved for future generations.”
The Alamo Trust Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, manages daily operations and long-term preservation efforts for The Alamo.
Join the Celebration: 2025 World Heritage Festival
To commemorate this anniversary, the City of San Antonio will host the annual World Heritage Festival from September 3 to 7, 2025. This multi-day celebration features live music, historical tours, community events, and family-friendly cultural experiences at each of the mission sites.
