Rosedale Park Mural Honors Boxer Robert “Pikin” Quiroga in San Antonio

A once-blank wall at Rosedale Park now tells the powerful story of Robert “Pikin” Quiroga, a championship boxer from the Westside of San Antonio. Titled Westside to Worldwide, the nearly 60-foot mural captures Quiroga’s life journey, depicting him from childhood through adulthood alongside friends and family.

The public art project is a collaboration between the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture, Parks & Recreation, and Council Districts 5 and 8, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving community stories.

“The entire Quiroga family is a pillar of the District 5 community and integral to San Antonio’s Westside,” said District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo. “The sport of boxing has brought our neighbors together and remains important to our community. This mural honors Mr. Quiroga while preserving Westside history.”

San Antonio artist Mike “Comp” Arguello was selected to lead the project, working closely with the Quiroga family to ensure authenticity. Known for his detailed spray-painted portraits, Arguello brings depth and emotion to each phase of Quiroga’s life represented on the wall.

“This project shows what’s possible when communities are heard,” said Krystal Jones, Director of the Department of Arts & Culture. “We’re proud to see Mr. Quiroga’s story transformed into a piece of art that is accessible to everyone.”

Located in District 5, Rosedale Park serves as a central gathering space with athletic courts, trails, and a pavilion already named after Quiroga. The addition of the mural further cements the park as a place of community pride and connection.

“Spaces like this bring families together and create lasting memories,” said Homer Garcia III, Director of Parks & Recreation. “We’re honored to celebrate Robert’s legacy through this mural.”

Quiroga, a graduate of Edgewood ISD’s Memorial High School, rose to become the International Boxing Federation Super Flyweight World Champion, defending his title five times before retiring. Known for his humility and strong ties to his community, he remains a beloved figure in San Antonio.

Quiroga was tragically killed in 2004 at the age of 34. In his honor, his brother Epifano “Epi” Quiroga founded SABULLYFREE, an anti-bullying initiative that continues to share Robert’s story and impact.

The mural stands as both a tribute and a reminder of legacy, resilience, and the enduring pride of San Antonio’s Westside.
