Twenty artists, composers, and instrumentals will perform at a special event for Contemporary Art Month called Overnight Sound: A Sonic Slumber Party from Saturday, March 26th (6pm) until Sunday, March 27th (8am) at 583 Roosevelt Ave., San Antonio, TX 78228 inside the Mercury Project Contemporary Art Space with a portion of ticket proceeds benefiting Ukraine Relief Aid.
At Overnight Sound: A Sonic Slumber Party, a total of 20 artists, composers, and instrumentals from central Texas, California, and beyond will present 12+ hours of sonic textures both electronic and acoustic. The San Antonio Ambient Orchestra will fill in the seams as the evening evolves through ambient instrumentals and experimental electronics. Sounds will run all night, from Saturday evening at 6pm until Sunday morning at 8am, with the hours from 1am to 6am reserved for music for sleep. The event is curated by Pamela Martinez of Teletextile, along Andrew Bergmann, Associate Professor of Music Technology at UTSA and Director of MuTeFest
This experience will create a space where the listener gets lost in time, much like a meditation. Like a dreamer succumbing to a dream, the listener, immersed in changing environments of sound, readjusts their consciousness and gains a new perception into the expansiveness of time.
During Overnight Sound: A Sonic Slumber Party people can listen for as long as they would like, coming and going as long as they do not disturb others. Guests are invited to bring their own blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, or bean bag chairs. Some snacks and beverages will be provided, but guests are encouraged to bring refillable water bottles and mugs for tea and coffee.
Pamela Martinez, known for her Sound Bath Meditations throughout Brooklyn, NY and San Antonio, TX, felt inspired to host this event after attending a 24 hour performance called Drone Fest, originally performed in Hudson, New York, which Pamela Martinez performed in.
“During a sound bath one often falls into the brain state between wake and sleep. Having led people to this experience one hour at a time during sound meditations, I thought, why not do it all night long? Hence came the idea for Overnight Sound: A Sonic Slumber Party with a 1am Sound Bath Meditation,” says Martinez.
The event doubles as the kick-off event for MuTeFest 5, UTSA’s yearly music technology festival. MuTe is UTSA’s student music tech organization, celebrating sonic textures and collaborative tech explorations with innovative seminars and creative interludes. Teletextile
Pamela Martinez is a Reiki master, educator, multi-instrumentalist and composer who creates music under the moniker Teletextile. Her “Björk-like” sound (The Boston Globe) moves from vocal layering and “electronic wizardry” (Metronome Magazine) to “dense, stormy guitar, piano, and electronics” (Time Out New York). Martinez has toured extensively in the US, Europe, the UK, and Asia. As a genre-hopping performer and musician, Martinez has performed violin at Carnegie Hall with a Carnatic Indian music ensemble, sang in San Francisco’s historic Fillmore Theater and takes part in performance art happenings in New York City. Her most recent directing and performing credits include Whisperlodge. The New York Times dubbed Whisperlodge “an unusual mix of theater and therapy” and has been featured in BuzzFeed, The Atlantic, Netflix and more with acclaim. Martinez passes on the craft of music to her community by teaching Reiki, violin, voice, piano, guitar, music theory and sound meditation to all ages and levels of students privately and at community education centers most recently as faculty at Brooklyn Music School, sound bath practitioner at Maha Rose Center for Healing (NYC) and Unlimited Thought Life Enrichment Center (SATX).
Listener’s Gallery Series
The Listeners Gallery offers sound based art and experimental performance presented by Teletextile and its founder Pamela Martinez. The Listeners Gallery aims to create an environment for intentional listening. They present events like lectures, exhibitions and concerts that showcase sound art, new music, and experimental music creation and performance. The Sonic Sleep Party is a collaboration between CAM, The Listeners Gallery, and MuTeFest at UTSA.
MuTeFest the Music Technology Program at UTSA
MuTe is a student organization at UTSA that focuses on education about music technology. The student organization has participated in events and activities that range from professional masterclasses to running live sound. MuTe is a key contributor to the MuTeFest which will feature works from students like audio and visual aspects. MuTeFest is a collaborator of Overnight Sound: A Sonic Slumber Party, alongside CAM and The Listener’s Gallery.
Contemporary Art Month
The month of March signifies the Contemporary Art Month (CAM). During this month, San Antonio gives a platform for artists and performers to show the community what they have to offer at galleries. Aside from galleries, they also have the opportunity to showcase at performing arts spaces, museums, schools, artist studios and various other locations around San Antonio.
