Honoring Local Heroes Who Continue to Serve Beyond the Uniform
San Antonio, known proudly as Military City USA®, has announced its 2024 Veterans of the Year—an annual recognition that honors local heroes who exemplify service, sacrifice, and continued commitment to their fellow veterans and community.
The Veterans Advisory Commission (VAC) and the City’s Military and Veteran Affairs Department (MVAD) received nominations from across the community. They carefully selected one veteran from each City Council district and one veteran employed by the City, who embodies the values of leadership, advocacy, and public service.

Established in 2024, the Veteran of the Year Award celebrates individuals who continue their legacy of service by giving back to the San Antonio community. To qualify, nominees must have served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces and demonstrated outstanding commitment to veteran causes, civic leadership, or volunteerism.
“San Antonio is proud to honor these outstanding veterans for their dedication to service—both in uniform and in our community,” said Maj. Gen. Juan Ayala (USMC, Ret.), Director of MVAD. “Their commitment to supporting fellow veterans and making a positive impact reflects the values of Military City USA®, and we are grateful for their contributions.”
These distinguished veterans will be formally recognized during the Military Transformation Task Force (MTTF) meeting at 9 a.m. on March 17 on the Concourse Level of City Tower.
As one of the nation’s most veteran-friendly cities, San Antonio’s continued investment in honoring and supporting its military community is evident through such programs. The VAC plays a key role in shaping veteran-related policy, as an essential bridge between military families and local government.
Congratulations to the 2024 Veterans of the Year—your service and leadership inspire us all.
