Mitchell Lake Audubon Center invites the community to connect with nature through birding, conservation, creativity and family-friendly activities throughout September 2026. Programs include guided bird tours, free admission during Latino Conservation Week, habitat restoration, nature walks and more.

Birds of a Feather Stitch Together
Saturday, September 5
8–11 a.m.

Ages 14+
Bring an embroidery project or use the provided felt and thread to create a small bird inspired by Sue Spargo’s Chirp collection. The slow-stitching group will meet inside the Welcome Center.

Guided Bird Tours
Sundays, September 6, 13, 20 and 27

Free for members | $10 for the general public

Recommended for ages 15+
Explore the different habitats of Mitchell Lake Audubon Center with an expert guide and see approximately 30 to 50 bird species. Tours travel by car and foot and may last up to four hours, although participants may leave at any time.
Bring binoculars, water, closed-toe shoes, long pants, and bug spray. Space is limited.

Community Free Days: Latino Conservation Week

Celebrate Latino Conservation Week with free admission to Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. Visitors can explore the outdoors, learn about native plants that support birds and enjoy family-friendly Bird Lotería. Printed activities and resources will be available in English and Spanish.

Second Saturday Habitat Work Day
Saturday, September 12

Ages 12+
Help care for the center’s habitat through trail maintenance, invasive-species removal, or planting native plants for birds and butterflies. Activities depend on the needs of the day, and all training will be provided.
Participants ages 18 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
Wingspan Game Time
Sunday, September 13
10 a.m.–noon

Bird enthusiasts and curious beginners are invited to play Wingspan, a competitive, card-driven board game. Players attract birds to wildlife preserves, collect food, lay eggs and build combinations across different habitats. The player with the most points after four rounds wins.

Beginner Bird Walk

Family-friendly | Recommended for ages 5+
Learn the basics of bird identification and how to properly use binoculars while exploring the sanctuary on foot. Mitchell Lake Audubon Center welcomes more than 300 bird species annually across its wetlands, woodlands, brushlands, and grasslands.
Beginning and experienced birders are welcome.

Native Plants for Fall Migrants Walk

Discover how native plants provide food, insects, and shelter for migrating and resident birds. During this guided walk, participants will learn which plants are especially valuable during fall migration and how to create a bird-friendly habitat at home.
