District 3 Digital Class Empowers Older Adults

In a meaningful step toward building a more connected community, District 3 Councilmember Phyllis Viagran is celebrating the success of a new pilot program that empowers older adults through digital education.

The District 3 Digital Dashboard class recently wrapped its five-week course, equipping participants with essential skills to confidently navigate today’s digital world. Hosted at the Southside Lions Senior Center and led by San Antonio Independent School District Adult and Community Education, the program focused on closing the digital divide by offering hands-on, accessible learning.

Participants were introduced to practical tools and services from San Antonio Water System, CPS Energy, VIA Metropolitan Transit, and the City of San Antonio’s 311 system, all of which play a vital role in everyday life. From managing utility accounts to navigating public transportation and accessing city services, the course emphasized independence, convenience, and real-world application.

Programs like this reflect the importance of meeting the community where they are, by creating opportunities that are not only educational but also empowering. By investing in digital literacy, District 3 continues to strengthen access, connection, and quality of life for its residents.

With the success of this pilot, more classes are expected to roll out this summer, expanding opportunities for older adults across the district to stay connected in an increasingly digital world.
