San Antonio’s legendary Battle of Flowers Parade returns in full color and sound for its 134th year with a vibrant theme: “Melodies in Bloom – A Texas Serenade.” Headlined by the Josh Abbott Band as Grand Marshals, this year’s celebration honors the rich and diverse musical legacy of Texas, with none shining brighter than the artistic contributions of our very own public schools.
Each school-themed float harmonizes music genres with florals, paying tribute to Texas’s musical giants and community roots:
🎵 MacArthur High’s “Hoedown Harmony” (Honeysuckle) captures the evolution of Texas country, from outlaw legends to honky-tonk heroes.
🎸 Sotomayor’s “Rock ‘N Roses” (Rose) echoes the rock ‘n’ roll revolution led by Buddy Holly, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
🎧 Brackenridge’s “Boomin’ Beats” (Hibiscus) nods to Houston’s hip hop legacy, celebrating innovators like DJ Screw and Travis Scott.
🎺 Johnson High’s “Jammin’ Journey” (Jasmine) brings the soul of Zydeco to the streets with legends like Clifton Chenier.
🎼 Harlandale’s “Symphony in Bloom” (Calla Lily) honors Texas’ influence in classical and opera music, highlighting the Houston Grand Opera and David Guion.
🌺 South San’s “Heart of Tejano” (Cosmos) celebrates the accordion-rich traditions of conjunto and iconic voices like Selena.
🪩 Wagner High’s “Dancin’ & Dreamin’” (Daisy) showcases the electric vibe of Texas’s EDM scene with nods to Tritonal and SXSW.
🎶 Lanier’s “Texas Blues” (Bluebonnet) pays homage to guitar greats like Stevie Ray Vaughan and the roots of Texas blues.
🎻 Warren’s “Mariachi Madness” (Marigold) proudly represents the rich traditions of mariachi music, deeply rooted in Texas education and culture.
🎷 Kennedy High’s “Cool Jazz” (Jessamine) brings jazz to the forefront, from Scott Joplin’s ragtime to San Antonio’s own Jim Cullum.
From the first flower toss in 1891 to today’s dazzling spectacle, the Battle of Flowers Parade remains a tribute to history, heritage, and harmony. As the founding event of Fiesta, this parade continues to unite the city through music, culture, and a shared sense of community spirit.
