Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia partners with Live from the Southside and the Knights of Columbus – St. Vincent de Paul Banquet Hall to host a free family-friendly community event in District 4. Food trucks and vendors will be at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 11 for an indoor and outdoor in-person gathering. Residents will have a chance to enjoy food and music as they form part of this inaugural summer celebration.
As the number of COVID-19 cases continues a downward trend and the number of vaccinated individuals gradually increases, this in-person festivity is designed to bring people together safely and encourage more community engagement in southwest San Antonio.
Supporting small businesses, especially vendors disproportionately impacted by the global pandemic, is part of the inspiration behind the event. Since launching the District 4 Small Business Committee earlier this year, Councilwoman Dr. Rocha Garcia continues to meet with small business owners and community partners committed to expanding available resources and opportunities for those situated in the southwest San Antonio.
“Speaking directly with small business owners and learning about the disparate impact of the global pandemic on their businesses further solidifies my commitment to advocating for policies and programs in support of those who make up the vast majority of our local economy,” stated Councilwoman Dr. Rocha Garcia, “As we work to recover from the effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we need to ensure support for our small businesses owners and their employees are a key component of our recovery and resiliency plans.”
Entrepreneurs like April Monterrosa, who is a proud Latina and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Live from the Southside, know first-hand the challenges many small businesses faced over the past year. Since founding the online and print publication, Live from the Southside, she has worked tirelessly to innovate marketing and outreach efforts that help support small business owners who don’t always have the discretionary funds or time to launch expansive marketing campaigns.
April recognized the importance of in-person events as the typical interaction that generates the majority of sales for small businesses. “Organizing this food truck event in District 4, the place where I grew up and still call home, is such a rewarding experience because it allows me to give back to my community and re-connect and support our local vendors”, April commented, “I am thrilled to be partnering with Councilwoman Dr. Rocha Garcia on this event and I hope we continue working with other community partners who serve District 4 residents.”
Valued partners like our local Knights of the Columbus councils play a significant role in building relationships with community members and serve as settings where friends and neighbors congregate. Michael Ramirez, a local small business owner, is proud to host food trucks and vendors at the SVDP Columbus Club Banquet Hall that typically features events like weddings, quinceañeras, and other celebrations.
Sunday Funday in District 4 will be an opportunity to invite residents to gather and celebrate as we resume hosting more in-person community-wide events in District 4. A special appearance by the Southside chapter of the Scooby Van of San Antonio will help promote literacy by giving out free books to children at the event, while supplies last.
