It was a wonderful evening on October 30th, filled with culture, community, and compassion as guests came together to support Judge Rosie Speedlin-Gonzalez and Reflejo Court at a special fundraising event. More than 100 beautifully hand-painted and decorated calaveras were on display for bidding, each one a vibrant symbol of transformation and hope. The proceeds from the evening will go directly toward supporting Reflejo Court’s mission to help participants rebuild their lives and strengthen families across San Antonio.
Reflejo Court, which fittingly means “reflection” in Spanish, is a nationally recognized, award-winning specialty court in Bexar County. Founded under the leadership of Judge Speedlin-Gonzalez of County Court 13, the program focuses on rehabilitating first-time domestic violence offenders through education, therapy, and ongoing support. Instead of relying solely on punishment, Reflejo Court offers participants the opportunity to reflect on their actions, heal from trauma, and acquire new tools to effect lasting change.
This one-year program combines accountability with empathy, requiring participants to attend regular court sessions, complete counseling and treatment programs, and participate in meaningful community service. A team of case managers, treatment providers, and legal professionals collaborates closely with Judge Speedlin-Gonzalez to support each participant in achieving success. The results speak for themselves: 96% of those who have completed the program have not reoffended.
Reflejo Court has been widely recognized for its success and innovation. It was recently certified as Bexar County’s first Level 1 Trauma-Informed Court by the South Texas Trauma-Informed Care Consortium. It was named Court of the Year by the Texas Association of Specialty Courts. These honors reflect the dedication of Judge Speedlin-Gonzalez and her team to creating a model of justice rooted in compassion, understanding, and second chances.
As guests admired the colorful calaveras and placed their bids, the evening served as a beautiful reminder of what Reflejo Court stands for renewal, accountability, and the belief that people can change when given the chance.
Reflejo Court continues to shine as an example of what’s possible when our community comes together to invest in people’s potential rather than their past. It’s yet another reason to celebrate the heart and resilience of San Antonio.
