Mitchell Lake Audubon Center to Break Ground on New Education & Events Pavilion

A new space for learning, gathering, and connecting with nature is coming to San Antonio’s Southside. Mitchell Lake Audubon Center will celebrate the start of construction on its new Education & Events Pavilion and wildlife viewing improvements on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

The celebration, Breaking Ground, Taking Flight, takes place on World Migratory Bird Day and brings together neighbors, conservation partners, and local leaders for a look at what is ahead for the center.

Mitchell Lake shared with us that the project is made possible through the City of San Antonio’s 2022 Bond Program. The improvements will expand educational programming and create more space for community gatherings, giving youth and families additional opportunities to connect with nature and conservation close to home.

For the Southside, that means investing in a place where students can learn outdoors, families can explore together, and community organizations can connect with their neighbors.

The speaking program starts at 10 a.m., followed by the ceremonial groundbreaking. Scheduled speakers include Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran; Kevin Harris of Audubon’s Board of Directors; Donovan Burton, SAWS Senior Vice President of Water Resources; Nick Melde, principal at Architexas; and Mitchell Lake Audubon Center Director Anna Macnak.

Participating conservation organizations include Bexar Audubon, Trinity Birders Association, Eco Centro and Alamo Area Master Naturalists.
