Guided Bird Tours    

Sunday, June 1, 8, 15 & 22 

Every Sunday morning at 8:00 am     

FREE for Members | $10 for General    

Registration Requested 

On this guided bird tour around the various habitats of Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, guests will see at least 30-50 different bird species with our expert guide. Travelling by car and foot to access as many areas as possible, this tour is best suited for the birder age 15+ as it can last up to four hours, though you may leave anytime. Space is limited. Bring your binoculars, a bottle of water, closed-toe shoes, long pants, and bug spray.    

Homeschool Adventures 

Wednesday, June 4

9:30 – 10:30 am

Mitchell Lake Audubon’s Homeschool Adventures is a set of outdoor, nature-based education classes for homeschool children ages 6-12. Classes will be held every other month. Each class covers a different topic and includes hands-on learning and exploration into conservation at Mitchell Lake.  

June 4: Marvelous Mud! – June brings International Mud Day! Mud is useful for many birds and other wildlife. Get messy and explore the benefits of mud to animals and us!

Let’s Go Birding Together – Beginner Bird Hike  

Celebrating Pride Month

Join us for a beginner bird hike for our LGBTQIA++ community and their families and allies. This hike is one in a series of bird walks taking place during Pride Month across the country, and it deliberately welcomes people who identify as LGBTQIA++ and their families and allies. Bring closed-toe shoes and sunscreen – we will provide binoculars, bug spray, and Let’s Go Birding Together! swag. Feel free to dress in your most colorful outdoor gear. 

2nd Saturday Habitat Clean-Up

Join us and other community members to help us clean up our habitat! We depend on our amazing volunteers to help manage our habitat. This can involve trail maintenance, removal of invasive species, and planting native plants for birds and butterflies, depending on the tasks of the day. All training provided. Groups are welcome! All children 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. 

Audubon Conservation Ranching and Bird-Friendly Beef Presentation

Learn about Audubon Texas’s Conservation Ranching and Bird-Friendly Beef Certification Program from Range Ecologist, Sara Galvan. She will speak on how cattle ranching and bird habitat conservation can go hand in hand.

Native Bee Program and Pollinator Project

Help us celebrate National Pollinator Week by learning about our native bees, their important role in the ecosystem, and what we can do to conserve them. Stop by between 11-12 to learn about the benefits that our local pollinators provide and make your pollinator watering station. Take home native plant educational material to learn what plants would work best to attract pollinators to your space.   

Beginner Bird Walk

There’s no better place for learning how to bird. At Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, we host 300+ birds annually on our 1,200-acre sanctuary which includes four diverse habitats for our wildlife: wetlands, woodlands, brushlands, and grasslands. Join us every fourth Saturday for Bird Tours designed for the beginning birder. Travelling by foot, your guide will go over birding identification and the proper use of binoculars. This is a family-friendly program best for ages 5+. Advanced birders are also welcome to attend. 

Birds and Brushes

Engage your artistic abilities for this event and enjoy a fun evening learning about birds and how we support their vital role in the ecosystem. Connect with fellow nature enthusiasts as we paint alongside artist, Jay Lauritsen and leave with your own Painted Bunting masterpiece to take home! All supplies will be provided as well as light refreshments. Guests 21+ welcome to BYOB. The Visitor Center will be open for 30 minutes after the program to allow additional time for painting customization and drying.
