Maverick Branch Library Celebrates 20 Years and Bazan Branch Reopens in San Antonio

February marked an important month for the San Antonio Public Library system. One branch celebrated its 20th anniversary of service. Another branch reopened following major upgrades. These milestones reflected the continued investment in literacy, education, and neighborhood resources across San Antonio.

Maverick Branch Library Celebrated 20 Years of Service

The Maverick Branch Library, located at 8700 Mystic Park, celebrated its 20th anniversary on February 14 with a community-wide event hosted by the San Antonio Public Library. The morning began with a speaking ceremony featuring District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito, Library Trustee Michele Dalbis-Robledo, Assistant City Manager David W. McCary, and Library Director Sukrit Goswami. Each reflected on the branch’s impact since opening its doors on February 18, 2006.

Families enjoyed a festive afternoon featuring a petting zoo, balloon art, face painting, arts and crafts, live jazz music, and visits from SAPL’s mascot, Smarty. The branch’s iconic façade, visible from Mystic Park, remains a distinctive landmark. Notably, the public art installation was developed by San Antonio artist Henry Rayburn through the City of San Antonio’s Design Enhancement Program. He drew inspiration from the original architectural design.

Named after Maury Maverick, Jr., a veteran, attorney, Texas legislator, and longtime columnist, the Maverick Branch has served as a welcoming space for learning and connection for two decades.

Bazan Branch Library Reopened After HVAC Upgrades

In another positive development for San Antonio libraries, the Bazan Branch Library at 2200 W. Commerce Street officially reopened on February 16, 2026. This happened after a full replacement of its heating and cooling system. The branch had temporarily closed in September for scheduled maintenance. Meanwhile, interim services were provided at the Atanacio Garcia Natatorium to ensure continued access for patrons.

With its reopening, Bazan Branch resumed its normal operating hours and began scheduling weekly programs for all ages. The branch also began recruiting teen volunteers, offering young community members an opportunity to serve and gain valuable experience.

The San Antonio Public Library continues to play a vital role in neighborhoods across the city by providing free access to books, technology, programming, and safe spaces for families. At Live From The Southside, we believe libraries are where opportunity begins. Celebrating 20 years at the Maverick Branch and welcoming Bazan back stronger reflects a continued commitment to community growth. When our libraries thrive, our city thrives.
