A familiar Westside story returns to the stage this November. The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is bringing Las Comadres de Morales St. back for a limited run at the SAY Sí Black Box Theater.
Written by San Antonio playwright, poet, and actor Irene Chavez, the play follows a group of neighbors whose lives are tied together by friendship, family, and the everyday realities of their community. Set on San Antonio’s Westside, Las Comadres de Morales St. touches on COVID-19, gentrification, and years of disinvestment, but at the center are the comadres, elders, and families who keep their community going.
Chavez has called the play her love letter to the Westside. The story was inspired in part by the elders she met through Seniors in Play and the stories of resilience they shared. Director Ruby Ruiz returns with the production, staged at SAY Sí while the historic Guadalupe Theater undergoes major renovations.
