International Women’s Day Spotlight shines today on Canela (Elisa) Kern, owner of Canela Vintage.
“We are “proud in your piel”, while keeping sustainability in mind and respecting pre-existing fashion. Canela Vintage is the culmination of my childhood dream to create a fashion company reflecting my Border roots and pride to be Mexican American, says Canela Kern.
Canela is the visionary and founder of Canela Vintage, a vintage fashion shop based in San Antonio, TX since 2017. Following her passion of helping others feel proud in their piel, Canela designs and styles outfits for any occasion. In line with her mantra of “giving old threads new vida!”, she keeps sustainability in mind while respecting existing fashion. Her studio, located in the Beacon Hill neighborhood, is an eclectic interpretation of her story thus far. There you can find nostalgic tokens of her youth and images conveying her inspirations, all surrounding her hand-picked fashion collections.
For Canela, helping others is the cornerstone of her vision. In 2018, she launched her annual “Every Kid Gets a Coat” drive. The first year she collected coats for two kindergarten classrooms and their families from Steele Elementary. Additional coats were available for anyone who needed to grab one off the rack, no questions asked. Canela also routinely supports the local artist community. She proudly supports the San Antonio College Drama department by providing wardrobe for their latest productions.
Canela was raised in the Rio Grande Valley, and her Mexican-American roots proudly shine in her work. In an effort to grow personally and professionally, Canela is currently pursuing a degree in Mexican-American Studies. She is mother of two beautiful children and the spouse of an Army veteran. In addition to fashion styling, her hobbies include photography, dancing, and collecting local art.
