Winter Meal Handout Brings Warmth to the South Side with Over 600 Tamale Plates

On December 20, 2025, the South Side of San Antonio once again demonstrated the true meaning of community during the Winter Meal Handout, hosted by the Harlandale Sunshine Pantry. What began as a seasonal outreach became a powerful show of unity and compassion, as more than 600 free tamale plates were prepared and distributed to families in need.

The heroes of the day were Lotus Rios, her husband Richard, and a dedicated team of volunteers, including local business owner Melanee Reyna of Cup Stuff and Catering, who worked tirelessly to serve the community. This effort reflects what the South Side has always stood for—neighbors helping neighbors.

A Story of Resilience and Purpose

Lotus Rios is a shining example of strength, faith, and service. After surviving a life-threatening stroke, she and her family committed to giving back in a deeper, more meaningful way. That promise helped sustain and grow the Harlandale Sunshine Pantry, which for the past three years has become a vital resource for South Side residents experiencing food insecurity.

The pantry offers more than food; it provides dignity, compassion, and reassurance to families during challenging times.

Reflecting on the Winter Meal Handout, Rios shared:

“We want to express our profound gratitude to all the individuals and organizations whose incredible generosity made our recent event a resounding success. Your contributions were truly invaluable and created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone present.”

Community Effort at Its Best

Rios extended special thanks to the Society of Native Nations, the American Indian Movement, and the Carnalismo Brown Berets for their collective efforts in procuring the tamales, which were a highlight of the meal.
Additional gratitude was shared for toy donations from Carnalismo Brown Berets, Filthys, Punks for Tots, and Hash Vegan Eats, which brought joy to children and families alike.

Financial contributions from the Reschman-Cuéllar Family, April Monterrosa, founder of Live from the Southside, Bianca Cordeo Dueño, and other anonymous donors enabled the provision of essential supplies, including beans.
The rice—another staple of the meal—was thoughtfully prepared by Cup Stuff Catering, Maria Monreal, and Lorie, while Random Acts of Snacks provided sweet treats that lifted spirits.

“While we’ve highlighted key contributors, we understand the success of this event was a true community effort,” Rios added. “We extend our deepest thanks to everyone involved. Your unwavering commitment is what makes these gatherings possible.”

Why Food Pantries Matter

Food pantries are essential community-based distribution centers that provide nourishment to individuals and families facing hardship. While each pantry serves unique neighborhood needs, their shared mission remains the same: to ensure no one goes without a meal.

The Winter Meal Handout is a powerful reminder of how local organizations, volunteers, and donors can come together to create immediate and meaningful impact.
