Sergeant Gabriel Gutierrez was directly responsible for saving the lives of household members on the 200 blk. of E. Amber, while they were asleep.
At approximately 0237 Hrs. Sgt. Gabriel Gutierrez was traveling northbound on S. Flores St. When he drove by E. Amber St., he detected a strong odor of what he perceived to be something burning. As he looked in the area of the odor, he noticed a large amount of smoke coming from within the residence.
With no time wasted, Sgt. Gabriel Gutierrez activated his patrol emergency lights to get the homeowners attention, jumped a secure gate and began to bang on doors and windows announcing in a loud voice “Police Department, the house is on fire” in an attempt to wake up the family.
The homeowner opened the front door and Sgt. Gabriel Gutierrez asked him if any other family members were in the house. Two Harlandale ISD elementary students were evacuated along with their mother. The San Antonio Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire.
Because of Sergeant Gabriel Gutierrez’s fast actions, he was able to save lives in our community. We are extremely thankful to Sergeant Gabriel Gutierrez for his fast response and heroic actions.
Harlandale ISD Superintendent, Gerardo Soto personally addressed Sgt. Gutierrez, “I commend you for your heroic efforts. As humble as you are I know you will tell me “you were just doing your job”. Well sir, JOB WELL DONE!”
Harlandale ISD is made up of 14 square miles on the south side of San Antonio, Texas within Bexar County. It is a part of an Education Service Center (ESC) – Region XX area.
The Harlandale Independent School District serves about 15,000 students with two traditional high schools, the STEM Early College High School, Frank Tejeda Academy, four middle schools, 13 elementary schools, a facility for special needs and two alternate campuses.
