A farmers market is defined as “a regular event in a town or city when farmers come to sell their fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, etc. directly to customers.” According to the National Farmers Market Directory from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), as of July 12, 2019, there are a total of 8,768 registered farmers markets in the United States. Of those 8,771 farmers markets, 236 of them are in Texas and 19 of them are in San Antonio.
AMF Ponderosa Lanes– 2118 Goliad Road- Market Days, hosted by the Thousand Oaks Public Market, helps the Thousand Oaks Youth Bowlers College Scholarship Fund, which assists with providing young adults the opportunity to attend college. The farmers markets are held every Sunday, March to September, from 12PM to 5PM.
Big State Produce Company Farmers Market– 102 Mabry Road on the 1,900-acre Port San Antonio campus, site of the formerly Kelly Air Force Base. The farmers market is held in the fall, every Saturday from 9AM to 1PM.
Communicare Health Center– 1102 Barclay Street- These farmers markets are held from 9AM to 1PM on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month.
Historic Market Square– 514 West Commerce Street- Historic Market Square is a three-block outdoor plaza lined with produce stands, restaurants and shops. The square is divided into two sections- El Mercado, which is home to 33 specialty shops and Farmer’s Market, which is home to 50 shops. Historic Market Square, the largest Mexican market in the United States, is open 7 days a week from 10AM to 7PM, except Sundays, when they close at 6PM.
Leon Springs Baptist Church– 24133 Boerne Stage Road in the church parking lot. The farmers market is held every Saturday from 8:30AM to 1PM.
Mission Marquee Plaza Farmers & Artisan Market– 3100 Roosevelt Avenue- Sponsored by the City of San Antonio’s World Heritage Office, at 100 West Houston Street, Suite 1900 and the San Antonio Food Bank, at 5200 Enrique M. Barrera Parkway. The markets are held from 10AM to 2PM on July 20th, August 17th, September 21st, October 19th and November 16th.
Palo Alto College Farmers Market– 1400 Villaret Boulevard at the Palo Alto College’s Performing Arts Center. The farmers market, sponsored by the San Antonio Food Bank, is available from 9AM to 1PM on July 22nd, September 23rd, October 28th and November 25th.
Pica Pica Plaza– 910 Southeast Military Drive- Sponsored by the San Antonio Food Bank, the farmers markets are held from 9AM to 1PM every Wednesday and Friday of the month.
San Antonio Food Bank Farmers Market– 5200 Enrique M. Barrera Parkway- The markets are held from 10AM to 1PM on July 27th, August 24th, September 28th and October 26th.
SoFlo Market– 1344 South Flores Street in the South Flores Arts District- According to their Facebook page, the market’s mission is “to provide our community with an alternative shopping experience with unique and handmade designs and to meet, interact and directly support the artisans who created them.” The market is held on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10AM to 4PM. The SoFlo Market was founded in 2013 by Ruth Guajardo and Yolanda Reyes.
The People’s Nite Market– 1314 Guadalupe Street- According to their Facebook page, their mission is “to create an accessible central hub to fresh and local produce for all communities and restaurants throughout San Antonio.” The market features produce from local farmers, as well as from River City Produce, located on 1616 South Laredo Street, a local, family-run distributor of fresh fruits and vegetables. Launched in 2015 by Valeria Hernandez and Jovanna Lopez, the farmers market is held in the fall (October-December) from 6PM to 9PM.
