Rooted: Indigenous Art & Stories
San Antonio, TX — The iconic Árbol de la Vida public art sculpture will come alive with storytelling, art, and community as families gather for Rooted: Indigenous Art & Stories, a free cultural celebration featuring artists Adriana Garcia, José Sotelo Yamasaki and author Xelena González on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 1:00– 4:00 PM. This all ages event is free and open to the public. Rooted: Indigenous Art & Stories marks a special double book launch honoring acclaimed local author Xelena González and illustrator Adriana Garcia, creators of the newly released picture books Of the Sun and For a Girl Becoming. Both titles explore themes of identity, heritage, and transformation, inviting readers of all ages to consider how stories connect, strengthen, and illuminate us.
Adding to the celebration, artist José Sotelo Yamasaki will present his imaginative Lotería Remedios collection, a re-envisioning of the beloved game that blends visual storytelling with cultural healing traditions with words by González. Sotelo Yamasaki will also lead a hands-on printmaking activity, open to all ages and skill levels. Throughout the afternoon, attendees will enjoy live art demonstrations, creative workshops, and opportunities to engage with all featured artists in an atmosphere rooted in inspiration and cultural connection. Metro Health’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program will offer food demonstrations featuring local ingredients and healthy recipes inspired by the Lotería Remedios card set. “Child of the Sun, on this land you are home.” – Of the Sun by Xelena González
