Native Plants: The Seedy Reality
Native Plants: The Seedy Reality
So you want to plant natives.
Want to know where you can find plants and seeds?
Are all the plants available at retail stores?
At a special event Monday, June 16 at Mission Branch Library. Craig Bruska, chairman of the Native Seed Committee of Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT), will explain: “How to identify when native seeds are ready to be collected and how to collect, process, label, and index native seed.”
The NPSOT Seed Committee works to help create and operate seed libraries throughout Texas. Bruska and NPSOT will be working with event co-sponsors Friends of Mission Branch Library and Gardening Volunteers of South Texas to make the Seed Library more sustainable as a place to exchange seeds that will restore the land and create beautiful habitats for all.
After the event the Seed Library at Mission Branch Library will be seeking seeds of native plants to restock the seed library to share with our community. Bring any ripe seeds that you had collected after last year’s growing seasons and get ready to plant a few during the event or donate to the seed library. Plan when to harvest ripe native seeds in 2025.
Craig Bruska, before becoming chairman of the Native Seed Committee of Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) had been a lifelong lover of nature. From family vacations to National Parks around the country. After retiring from the U.S. Navy (Seabees) he spent eight years overseeing facilities and the 100+ miles of trails for the Lake County Forest Preserve District (IL) where his crews restored 1,000 plus acres of wetlands and invasive species removal, specifically Glossy European Buckthorn. Since moving to Texas in the fall of 2019 he has been a student of Texas Native Plants.
