Indigenous Blacksmiths of the Missions featuring Alex Ruiz, who carries forward a legacy rooted deep in San Antonio’s history. Alex will share the story of his 9th great grandfather Juan Banul, the original master blacksmith for San Antonio from 1725 through the 1750s, as well as the indigenous blacksmiths, whose work supported the missions and the growing community. Through history, demonstration, and storytelling, this presentation highlights indigenous skill, intergenerational knowledge, and the enduring role of blacksmithing in mission life and cultural survival.

Alex has been featured on the History Channel’s show “Forged in Fire” (champion of season 5 episode 13 “The Horseman’s Axe” and finalist of season 10, episode 15 “The Vaquero Machete”) and on too many publications to mention here.

This presentation is a live event and is free and open to the general public. It is also available on our YouTube Channel at SAMIDTX.ORG
