Gardening Essentials FIELD TRIP Confluence Park
Monday, May 19, 2025
11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Confluence Park was developed by San Antonio River Foundation near the confluence of San Pedro Creek into the San Antonio River as a world-class innovative outdoor classroom for the region where educators can provide hands-on scientific environmental educational experiences.
Confluence Park is home of the 2,500-square-foot North American Friendship Garden planted as a collaborative effort by the Consulate General of Canada in Texas, Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio, City of San Antonio, San Antonio River Authority, and San Antonio River Foundation. “As the Monarch Butterfly and other migrating species travel between Canada, Mexico, and San Antonio, the North American Friendship Garden reminds visitors that through respect, dialogue, and a true spirit of collaboration, all communities can be nurtured and thrive.”
Ball-Nogues Studio, and Rialto Studio included five landscape ecotypes. Confluence Park is “energy neutral”, drawing upon a photovoltaic array for its own use and contributing excess to the power grid.
Designed by Lake | Flato Architects, Matsys, and Rialto Studio, park elements include a site-wide rainwater catchment system and underground storage system which is the sole source of water used in the park except potable water for sinks and drinking fountains. The Estela Avery Education Center, where we will meet during lunch, has a green roof providing thermal mass for passive heating and cooling.
