District 4 Councilmember Welcomes Transformative Change to South San ISD Community

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) appointed a seven-member Board of Managers and a new superintendent to lead and operate the South San Antonio Independent School District (ISD). The following is a statement from the District 4 Councilmember representing the South San ISD community on the San Antonio City Council.

“Today’s announcement symbolizes a resurgence of community leadership focused on prioritizing South San ISD students who deserve a high-quality education and access to opportunities for success,” stated the District 4 Councilmember. “We’re grateful to those who answered the call to serve their community and believe their respective experiences and skill sets will help them make decisions designed to improve student academic outcomes, regain public trust, and ensure fiscal responsibility.

“Thank you to the TEA Commissioner Mike Morath and Deputy Commissioner Steve Lechelop for listening to community concerns and taking this decisive step in the best interest of students. Deputy Commissioner Lechelop has kept all informed and been responsive since the beginning of this process.

“Despite years of governance failures, the educators and staff at South San ISD are the true heroes who show up daily for the students and lift their spirits during uncertainty and turmoil.

“We look forward to working collaboratively with the new leadership and encourage families to meet with the newly appointed board of managers. We need to unite as a community to support these individuals who want to help our kids have the education they deserve.”
