A Historic Moment Along the River Walk
Casa Rio, San Antonio’s oldest River Walk restaurant, marked a major milestone in its history with the unveiling of a newly commissioned Casa Rio River Walk mural celebrating its 80-year legacy. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday, December 17, welcoming community leaders, media, and guests to honor eight decades of culture, hospitality, and tradition along the San Antonio River Walk.
The mural unveiling officially launched Casa Rio’s 80th anniversary celebration, setting the tone for a year of commemorative events planned throughout 2026. In particular, the Casa Rio River Walk mural became a highlight for the celebrations.
Honoring Eight Decades of Culture and Community
Created by local artist Cristina Sosa Noriega, the mural titled “The Flow of People, The Passage of Time” paid tribute to Casa Rio’s deep roots in San Antonio’s cultural landscape. Through layered imagery and vibrant storytelling, the Casa Rio River Walk mural reflected the continuous movement of people, history, and shared experiences that have shaped Casa Rio since its founding in 1946.
The mural served as both a visual celebration and a historical reflection, honoring generations of locals and visitors who have gathered at Casa Rio along the river’s edge. Notably, the Casa Rio River Walk mural will continue to inspire future generations.
Community Leaders and City Support
The event featured remarks from Elizabeth Lyons Houston, Owner and Vice President of Casa Rio, who spoke about the restaurant’s enduring role in the community and its commitment to preserving tradition while welcoming new generations.
Also in attendance was the City of San Antonio, represented by Krystal Jones, Director of Arts & Culture, highlighting the importance of public art in preserving San Antonio’s cultural identity and storytelling along the River Walk.
A Landmark with Deep Historical Roots
Founded in 1946, Casa Rio was the very first restaurant to open on the River Walk and has remained a cornerstone of the area ever since. Built on land originally granted in 1777 by the King of Spain, the historic hacienda has long been synonymous with Tex-Mex tradition, colorful riverside umbrellas, and the iconic river barge experience that defines downtown San Antonio.
The mural unveiling not only honored Casa Rio’s past but also celebrated its continued presence as a gathering place where history, food, and community intersect.
