BBQ Spots in Southside San Antonio

A BBQ, or barbecue, restaurant is one that specializes in barbecue-style cuisine and dishes, which basically means that meats, like brisket, chicken, pulled pork and ribs, are slow-smoked or barbecued over a grill. San Antonio’s South Side is home to quite a few BBQ restaurants.

B&B Smokehouse– B&B Smokehouse is located at 2619 Pleasanton Road. According to their website- “We have one simple mission: provide San Antonio with the best Texas BBQ in town.” The family-owned restaurant opened for business in 1984. Open for lunch and dinner, a popular menu item at the restaurant is the Ranch Hand Barbecue Plate. The plate comes with a choice of 2 meats- brisket, BBQ chicken, pulled pork, sausage or smoked turkey and a choice of 2 sides- coleslaw, creamed corn, French fries, green beans, pinto beans, potato salad or Spanish rice.

Bill Miller Bar-B-Q– According to Wikipedia, Bill Miller Bar-B-Q “is a San Antonio-headquarted restaurant chain that focuses on barbecue food, accompanying side dishes, and baked goods.” Founded in 1953, Bill Miller Bar-B-Q has over 70 locations throughout Austin, Corpus Christi and San Antonio. Open for lunch and dinner, a popular menu item at Bill Miller Bar-B-Q is the BBQ Rancher Plate. The plate comes with a choice of 2 meats- brisket, chicken, ham, pork spareribs, sausage or turkey and a choice of 3 sides- coleslaw, French fries, green beans, hash browns, mashed potatoes, pinto beans, potato salad or Spanish rice.

Dee Willie’s BBQ– Dee Willie’s BBQ opened their first restaurant, in 2017, at 12130 O’Connor Road, but on December 28th, 2018, they announced the opening of their 2nd location at 6506 South Zarzamora Street. Open for lunch and dinner, one of their new menu items is the Atomic D&D Sandwich, which features house brisket and homemade mac & cheese on toasted buns, topped with pickles, marinated onions and barbecue sauce.

Iron Q Barbeque & Catering– Iron Q Barbeque & Catering is a mobile catering business. Not only do they cook up 5-star hotel flavorful food, Chef Iron Q is an actual Southside San Antonio native. While Iron Q’s BBQ specialties are the customer’s favorites, all kinds of cuisines and custom orders are available  by request. J&D’s Bar-B-Que– J&D’s Bar-B-Que is located at 211 Palo Alto Road. As stated on the restaurant’s website- “Est. 1990. A local small business here to serve you great food at a great price.” Open for breakfast and lunch, the Beef Brisket Plate is a popular menu item at J&D’s Bar-B-Que. The plate comes with 1/3rd pound of beef brisket, beans, potato salad, rice, onions, pickles and 2 slices of bread.

South BBQ & Kitchen– South BBQ & Kitchen is located at 2011 Mission Road. Established in 2018 and open for lunch and dinner, a popular menu item at the restaurant is the Family Pack #1. Family Pack #1 comes with 1 pound of sliced brisket, 1 pound of pork ribs, 2 pints of barracho beans and 2 pints of Spanish rice. All of their meats, sides, pickles and sauces are made in-house daily.

Southside BBQ– Southside BBQ is located at 6020 South Flores Street. Serving lunch and dinner, one of the popular items on their menu is the Rodeo Plate. The Rodeo Plate comes with a choice of 3 meats- brisket, chicken, pulled pork, ribs or sausage- and a choice of 2 sides- potato salad, rice, beans, green beans or coleslaw.

The Big Bib BBQ– The Big Bib BBQ is located at 8535 Mission Road, at the Stinson Municipal Airport. Serving lunch and dinner, their most popular menu items are their Plates. The plates include a choice of baby back ribs, brisket, chicken, pulled pork, rib tips, sausage or turkey. All of their plates come with a choice of 2 sides- baked potato casserole, chili beans, coleslaw, collard greens, green beans, pinto beans, potato salad or their #1 side, sweet potato casserole.

The Smokehouse BBQ– The Smokehouse BBQ is located at 3306 Roland Avenue. Established in 2004, the restaurant slow cooks their meats, using 100% mesquite wood, on their 40-foot indoor pit. Serving lunch and dinner, one of their most popular menu items is the Brisket, Sausage and Pork Rib Plate, which comes with a choice of 2 sides- cream corn, French fries, green beans, macaroni & cheese, pinto beans, potato salad or Spanish rice.
