Southside Spotlight: Adam “Ace” Garcia
Adam “Ace” Garcia, a native of San Antonio, has spent his life weaving together two passions: community management and music. Raised in the heart of the Southside, Adam experienced a few of his early teen years in Michigan and Washington State before returning to his roots. Now, he balances a multifaceted career as a Community Manager for manufactured home communities and an on-air personality and show producer for KLMO 98.9 FM Radio.
With over 20 years in management, Adam’s day job revolves around helping people. He specifically assists individuals in purchasing new homes, including first-time homeowners. He finds great fulfillment in working closely with families, guiding them through the often intimidating homeownership process.
However, Adam’s connection to music runs just as deep, having been a mobile DJ for 40 years. He began spinning records in some of the most iconic Tejano clubs during the genre’s explosive popularity in the 90s. His radio career is approaching its fifth year, but his love for music extends beyond DJing. A seasoned musician, he plays drums and has performed with many local bands, even touring with the renowned Eva Ibarra.
Like many musicians, Adam’s road has only sometimes been smooth. While there were periods when music could sustain him financially, the landscape shifted with the rise of technology and an influx of younger DJs. “There are many more DJs now,” he says, “and the business hasn’t kept up with inflation. Pay can be meager for bands.”
Despite these challenges, he has stayed active in the business, primarily through word of mouth and repeat clients who have witnessed his dynamic performances. A key to his longevity in the industry is his supportive family, who understand the late hours and missed events with the territory.
Adam is most proud of his enduring contributions to the Tejano music scene. “Opening up for big acts like Jay Perez, Mazz, and Culturas was incredible,” he recalls. He also had the honor of introducing legendary performers such as Selena and Emilio on stage during his club DJ days. Surviving in the competitive world of DJing, both as a mobile DJ and club DJ, is an achievement he holds dear.
His humility and commitment to the future of Tejano music are what truly set him apart. Ace believes in teaching the younger generation, recognizing that it’s the only way to keep the genre alive. “I hope I made at least a small impact in the Tejano music industry,” he reflects.
Beyond his professional achievements, Adam’s background may surprise some. As a child and teen, he spent years working as a migrant worker, picking cucumbers, strawberries, cherries, and apples. During this time, he witnessed the César Chávez movement firsthand, an experience that has undoubtedly shaped his values and work ethic.
A proud graduate of Harlandale High School, he continues to honor his Southside heritage. His advice is simple but powerful: “Life is short. Do what you love and love what you do. Stay humble and always be open to learning new things. My priorities are God, family, work, and friends.”
He is always open to collaborations for those interested in working with Ace, whether as a drummer, sound and light technician, or even a fellow DJ. He also enjoys hosting and MCing events and invites listeners to tune into the shows he produces on KLMO, including:
The April Monterrosa Show (Saturdays, 9-10 AM)
Placido Salazar (Saturdays, 10 AM-12 PM)
All New Tejano Music Tuesdays with Earl Hudson (Tuesdays, 6-8 PM)
