6 Fun Reasons You Should Attend the Barbacoa and Big Red Fest

Barbacoa and Big Red Fest in San Antonio

Barbacoa and Big Red is a favorite meal combination in San Antonio. And what better what to celebrate this than with a festival, right? Presented by H-E-B, the 9th Annual Barbacoa & Big Red Festival will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at The Greenline at Live Brooks, formerly the Brooks City-Base/Brooks Air Force Base.

New, Larger Location– As mentioned above, the 2019 festival will be held at The Greenline at Live Brooks. The first festival, held in 2012, took place at the former The Park Sports Bar on Babcock Road, in North-Central San Antonio. There was only expected to be 500 attendees, but the festival turned out over 1,500 attendees. Since they needed a larger venue, subsequent festivals were held at the R&J Music Pavilion on Pleasanton Road, on San Antonio’s South Side. However, with over 10,000 visitors attending the festival each year, the event had to be moved once again, to an even larger venue for 2019.

Family-Friendly Event– The festival has activities, entertainment and games for all ages, making it a great event for the whole family to attend. You can also bring the family dog, as long as they are non-aggressive and on a leash.barbacoa and big red fest

Affordable Admission– General admission pre-sale admission tickets are only $5 per person. If you purchase admission tickets at the festival, on the day of the event, general admission tickets will be $10 per person. Kids, ages 12 and under, get into the festival absolutely free. There is also free parking for everyone.

Barbacoa & Big Red– The Annual Barbacoa & Big Red Festival’s main attractions are the barbacoa food trucks/vendors, from throughout the San Antonio area, and lots of Big Red soft drinks. There are also other food trucks/vendors, as well as other types of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages (for those 21 and over), so there is something for everyone.

Barbacoa Competition– Each year, the event features the Best Festival Barbacoa, of which you get to taste all the entrants delicious barbacoa. Previous year’s winners have included Benjie’s Munch Truck, Celorio Barbacoa, Pepe’s Barbacoa, Rios Barbacoa and Tortilleria del Barrio.

Live Music– The festival features more than 20 live bands and 10 DJ’s performing throughout the event. The bands and DJ’s feature an array of music genres so there is something for all musical tastes. Some of the 2019 performers will include Los Desperadoz, a Latin Grammy-nominated Tejano band; the North American Pharaohs, an alternative rock band; The Electric Cowboys, a Grammy-nominated country music band; Zero Gravity, a hard rock band and DJ Quake, the mix-maker of the San Antonio Spurs.
