Over 1200 Books Donated to the Scooby Van Southside Chapter

The first installation of the Scooby Van of San Antonio Southside Chapter Little Library took place at Brooster’s Backyard Icehouse on Saturday December 26, 2020. It was a great success as community members safely gathered around to unveil the  “little library”. The admired and customized artwork of the little library was created and painted by Southside San Antonio local artist Bobby Avila, owner of AviDos Art.

“My goal is to shed more light on reading, writing, and the arts in the Southside and the unveiling of this little library is a great start”, mentioned April Monterrosa, Editor in Chief of Live from the Southside Magazine. Norm Velez, owner of Brooster’s Backyard Icehouse and Linda Pearson, CEO/Founder of the Scooby Van of San Antonio also shared a few words on Live from the Southside’s Live Facebook post.

Many children from the area were excited to see the Scooby Van and receive free books and Scooby snacks, including local Southside kid entrepreneurs and authors the Crafty Cortez Sisters. An employee from the Leon Valley library even stopped by the event to show her support for the Southside Chapter.

Father and daughter Jesse and Ashley Esparza who regularly follow @SouthsideSATX on social media, got wind of the event and made their way from the Westside and donated over 300 books. The power of social media didn’t end there; 1st grade teacher Sherry Giddens from Somerset ISD also donated over 500 books.
